Dr Martens

Klaus Märtens is the German doctor who, in 1946, then recovering from an injury he sustained while skiing, developed, with his friend the engineer Herbert Funck, a shoe to facilitate his travels. This is how the first shoe mounted on an air cushion and primarily for orthopedic use was born.

In 1959, English shoe manufacturer Bill Griggs obtained the exclusive license to produce these shoes and decided to anglicize the name. The brand thus becomes “Dr. Martens”. He then undertook some modifications of the original airwair concept before the launch of sales.

The first model to be released from the English production factories, the 1460, was launched on April 1st, 1960 and is still in production to date.
